Why in News?
o India marks a decade of the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), launched on 25 June 2015 as the country’s first urban mission with a focus on water infrastructure.
• Key Provisions:-
o AMRUT 2.0, launched on 1 October 2021, aims to continue the mission until 2025–26, extending coverage to all Urban Local Bodies (ULBs).
o Implemented by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, its primary goals include ensuring tap water and sewerage connections for all urban households, enhancing city amenities like parks, and curbing pollution through improved public transport systems.
o As a centrally sponsored scheme, funding is distributed among States and UTs based on their urban population and number of cities.
o Initially covering 500 cities, the current count stands at 485 after mergers. Notable sub-initiatives include 'Jal Hi AMRIT' for safe water reuse and 'AMRUT Mitra', which empowers Self-Help Group (SHG) women with water management skills at the community level.
