Nano-Fertilisers and Biostimulants: Voluntary Use Emphasized by Centre

Why in News:
The Union Agriculture Minister has recently urged Chief Ministers to stop the practice of compelling farmers to buy nano-fertilisers and biostimulants as part of agricultural input packages. This directive follows reports indicating that some states are mandating the use of these products. The Centre emphasized that the adoption of such technologies must be based on awareness, education, and farmer choice rather than compulsion.

About Nano-Fertilisers and Biostimulants:
Nano-fertilisers are nutrient-rich formulations in which the active ingredients are encapsulated within particles measuring 100 nanometres or less. Their extremely small size enhances nutrient absorption, enables targeted delivery, and reduces nutrient wastage, making them a potentially eco-friendly and cost-effective alternative to conventional fertilisers. These properties can also help in minimizing environmental damage caused by excessive fertiliser use.

Biostimulants, on the other hand, are products derived from natural substances or microorganisms that stimulate the plant’s natural growth processes. Unlike fertilisers, biostimulants do not directly provide nutrients but improve plant health by enhancing nutrient uptake, increasing resistance to stress, and promoting overall yield. Common biostimulants include humic and fulvic acids, seaweed extracts, compost teas, and beneficial microbes like bacteria and fungi.

While both nano-fertilisers and biostimulants show promise in promoting sustainable and efficient agriculture, the Centre has made it clear that their usage should remain voluntary. The focus should be on promoting awareness and informed decision-making among farmers rather than enforcing their use through government programs or schemes. This approach ensures that farmers maintain autonomy over their agricultural practices and adopt new technologies based on clear understanding and benefit.
