The World Heart Federation’s “World Heart 2025: Obesity and Cardiovascular Disease” report draws urgent attention to the global rise in obesity and disparities in access to treatment. Since 1990, adult obesity has nearly quadrupled—by 2022, 878 million adults were living with obesity, compared to 194 million in 1990. If trends continue, two-thirds of adults over 25 could be overweight or obese by 2050.
Obesity, as defined by the World Health Organization, involves excessive fat accumulation harmful to health. A Body Mass Index (BMI) of 25–29.9 is considered overweight, and 30 or above as obese.
BMI is calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by height in meters squared. In India, 24% of women and 23% of men are obese (NFHS-5).
Key recommendations include systemic policies like taxing sugary drinks, subsidizing healthy food, expanding access to obesity medications such as GLP-1RAs, and integrating obesity-specific guidelines into cardiovascular care and lifestyle interventions.
