The UAPA tribunal has upheld the Centre’s decision to extend the designation of Meghalaya’s Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) as an ‘unlawful association’ for five more years.
The Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, aims to prevent unlawful activities and tackle terrorism. It was amended in 2019 to allow the designation of individuals as terrorists, in addition to organizations.
The UAPA Tribunal, set up by the Central Government, is headed by a High Court judge and functions with staff and funding from the government. It holds powers similar to a civil court under the Code of Civil Procedure, 1908, to hear cases related to unlawful associations.
